Why do I want a Doula?

Doula is a Greek word that means "woman who serves." Doulas provide emotional, physical and educational support to women and their families during pregnancy, at birth and during the postpartum period. The experiences of many women have demonstrated that births attended by doulas have fewer complications and more positive outcomes.

Our doulas are birth professionals, having thoroughly studied pregnancy, birth, breastfeeding and baby care. The combined experience of our group offers a wealth of knowledge about the transition to parenthood. The CNY Doula Connection meets regularly to learn together and become better educated to serve our clients.

Moms who use doulas report:
  • Doulas provided uninterrupted support to the mother during labor.
  • They helped the mother relax and rest.
  • They provided information on different birth choices.
  • Having a doula reduced the use of pitocin, forceps or vacuum extraction and cesarean delivery.
  • Less need for pain medications.
  • Lowered incidence of postpartum depression.

Partners and families love doulas because:
  • The doula helped them transition to parenthood.
  • Doula helped them feel included in the birth experience.
  • They reported feeling more relaxed and confident.

Babies who had a doula at their birth:
  • Are likely to have a healthier start due to less complications at birth.
  • Are more likely to be successfully breastfed.
  • Research tells us they are less likely to be abused.
  • Have happier, more confident parents.
